What we get on 12/31/2021 / 1/1/2022:
We don't get really of the new Winter anime or continuing/ongoing today :(
We get instead a lot of specials and ova drops instead to tie us over XD

Now to comment on the anime.

Not bad. Yeah, just a rehash of the first part of Season 1, but the fact it was shown from the POV of the various characters made it special. I liked it, because it wasn't the normal rehash other anime does.

I've always been bothered by something: What happened to the real Catarina and Sophia? Have their consciousness been overridden by the rebirth of those two high-school girls? Does that mean they are dead?

This is always a big question in Tensei series.

My personal headcanon for these sort of situations is that when Monkey Girl died, her soul was transferred and was reborn as Catarina. She grew up normally, but only regained her prior memories after the fall.

What I’m trying to say is that Catarina’s original personality was what Monkey Girl would have grown up to be had she never retained knowledge of her former life. It’s the same liquid, just poured into a different container.

That's more or less correct, it's easier to understand if you're Japanese since the concept of reincarnation is the big thing in Buddhism, which is a big religion over there. Unlike in Abrahamic religion, souls don't go to heaven permanently in Buddhism, basically if you do good deeds you get to enjoy vacation as a celestial being, then you die again and your soul gets rejudged before being thrown into a new newborn baby body, if you do bad deeds you get judged guilty and still gets a new body but a bad one like insects, animal, etc. Instead of living forever in paradise, the goal of Buddhism is to escape this cycle permanently by returning your soul to the void, which can only be done by removing all your attachment to the world.

It's easier if you analogue it to computers, the body is like most of the computer parts, the soul is the storage device (Let's say hard drive), and the memories are the data inside the drive. Normal reincarnation basically means that you build a new PC, but uses your old PC's hard drive in this new one and deleted all the data in them. That severe concussion Catarina has as a kid basically recovered the old data after the PC had been used from her birth until that point.

Japan is more Shinto than Buddhism, though.

So then who is who? Are we looking at real Catarina with additional new memories from Highschool girl, or Highschool girl who've been running on "factory settings" this whole time before "back-up storage" was downloaded after she bumped her head? More to the second question: does that original Catarina, technically, may have never existed or ceased to exist after she gained Highschool girl's memories?

Both, really. The only difference between original Catarina and new Catarina are those memories.

Real as in?
The person who was Catarina died from severe concussion when she slip and fell and hit her head. Her soul went elsewhere, if she had a soul in the first place (we're allegedly inside a game world, afterall).
The person who reincarnated into Catarina supposedly died in our world and her soul got transferred into Catarina.

But she didn't die after she fell, that's the problem. She suffered a concussion.

As far as we know the "Real" Catarina died when she fell and hit her head. Her body has been taken over by the person from the "real world" who played the game.

Bakarina: enjoys people, shows unconditional love, collects huge circle of friends.
Everyone else: "what a strange girl...I think I love her!"
Unconditional Love is rare and precious, on the earth. Chase it when you find it; and perhaps those who seek find.
